Awakening

18x24 Inches, Acrylic on Canvas

At 600 feet above sea level, Diamond Rock is the tallest of the volcanically-formed “Pinnacles”. It gets its name from bird guano, which makes it gleam brilliantly. It’s very picturesque, despite its less-than-glamorous provenance. I just had to paint it.

Captain Goose

18x24 Inches, Acrylic on Canvas

Captain Goose was the nickname of a Dutch chartered sailboat Captain on Carousel Island in Curaçao. He inspired this painting.

Campsite

18x24 Inches, Acrylic on Canvas

In my early days as a Boy Scout, I would go camping in upstate New York. The crackling warmth of a campfire and the serenity of fishing evokes a sense of peace and tranquility that I wanted to capture. I hope it brings you the same.

Pelicans’ View from St. Maarten

18x24 Inches, Acrylic on Canvas

Pelicans gaze across the water at the distant shore of St. Maarten. They are funny birds, pelicans. They don’t look like they can fly, yet they do so majestically and gracefully. They are extraordinary at fishing. And they’re larger in life than they appear in any pictures.

Did you see something you like?

Fisher Man

18x24 Inches, Acrylic on Canvas

Fishing is integral to the life and culture of Saba, and a contest is held every year to determine who has the largest catch. I was inspired to paint this after having heard so many stories about fishermen in the Caribbean.

Penelope at the Beach

PInk Dolphin

18x24 Inches, Acrylic on Canvas

I imagined her walking near Danny’s as the wind blew her clothes against her form. Once one of the tiny thatched-roof bars along the beach on St. Maarten, Danny’s is blessed with the most beautiful sunset views and is a much larger establishment today.

A View of St. Maarten from Anguilla

18x24 Inches, Acrylic on Canvas

I found an absolutely beautiful spot on the island of St. Maarten where, on a clear day, and when conditions are right, you can look across the waters and see Anguilla in the distance. This was a must-paint for me!

18x24 Inches, Acrylic on Canvas

Yes, it’s an unusual color for a dolphin. But he himself is blithely – and perhaps even intentionally – unaware of his own difference as he plays in the water. And in his innocence, he is majestic!

This is my first attempt at painting since I was blinded in 2001. The scene is a depiction of what I remember about the island of Saba before I lost my sight. “Awakenings'' is just that: an awakening of my love for creativity and self-expression.
